Challenge

This design/assist project, which was three projects in one, includes all mechanical components and systems, including steam and chilled water site utilities. From a manpower standpoint, it is the largest job Shapiro & Duncan has ever taken on.

Our biggest challenge, in addition to the size and scope of the project, was the tight and inflexible completion date. With patients coming from the old Walter Reed facility in Northwest Washington, D.C. as part of the Base Relocation and Closure (BRAC) initiative, the end date could not be moved.

Solution

We worked closely with Clark-Nexsen, the project engineers, to select the equipment to be used on this project. The scope of our solution included:

  • 145,000 square foot administrative facility;
  • 70,392 square foot fitness center above a multi-story, cast-in-place 203,400 square foot parking garage; and
  • 280,519 square foot bachelor enlisted quarters with administrative offices and dining facility.

Result

This project was a highly visible, highly scrutinized complex of buildings that met exacting federal job guidelines and standards. To get this massive project completed on time, it took a tremendous commitment from Shapiro & Duncan team members. Working nights and holidays, our team members gave it their all for this most worthy of causes – restoring the health and well-being of our country’s Wounded Warriors.
